Well, today was supposed to kick off my first #threetunetuesday share of tracks from my vinyl collection. Unfortunately, I didn't get there. For some reason, I've been obsessed with getting back into the music of Sonic Boom (ie Peter Kember) after hearing about his most recent collaboration with Panda Bear. Yeah, Spacemen 3 is one of my favorites, but Kember's work post-Spacemen is quite a good solid tootoo. So for this week's #threetunetuesday , as initiated by , we're going the way of Sonic Boom.
Sonic Boom : The Way You Live
This track came out in 2019, I think...right around the time of New Order's more recent release. One review, if I recall correctly, said "skip the New Order garbage, and find Sonic's new album instead." I have to agree...this one is classic drone/cycles/spacemen 3. It's an impressive little song with good lyrics to boot...the waves do indeed wash over and over and over. The rest of the album isn't bad, either!
Spectrum : I Know They Say
Speaking of waves and waves, here is another gem from Kember and his band Spectrum. Nothing overly intense here; it's just a gentle, somber melody to zen out to. I remember this one while driving through the desert of Nevada in December of 2001 with the mixed CD playing. Windows open, cool air through the air, dusk giving away to the darkness of the desert, and no cars for miles around. Absolutely beautiful; thanks for sharing the moment with me, Spectrum!
Spectrum : (I Love You) To the Moon and Back
More sonic bliss, more drones, and more cycles. I'm highly certain Kember was influenced by the likes of Glass and Reichter. Very minimalistic with strings and guitar. My favorite part, however, is that crescendo that starts the song out, and then brings it back at 4:10. Another song I heard only once on Napster, and I never, ever forgot it since.
Easy enough for a #TTT; thanks for stopping by, as always! Long live those surreal Nevada desert nights spent with the Spacemen - I will never forget those nights...
