This week I'm going sentimental for #threetunetuesday, as brought to us by . As I went through some old vinyls here at the house, I stumbled across the Deerhunter record Microcastle. What memories of that album. Years ago, after I broke up with my ex-girlfriend, I fondly recall many runs and walks listening to the amazing record on the original Droid phone. So long ago...still, what a record. I'm just happy to have it as a vinyl, now.
The lead singer/songwriter of Deerhunter is Bradford Cox. I haven't kept up with his solo or Deerhunter stuff of late, but the early stuff has a certain vibe to it. Call it a bit of Lennon, Everly Brothers, Beatles, MBV, Spacemen 3, even the Kinks...their music always resonated with me. So with that said, this week's share is a sampling of Cox's earlier work.
Atlas Sound : Recent Bedroom
The first track this week comes from Cox's solo-project, Atlas Sound. The guitar on this one always reminded me so much of a Lennon track. You know? That "down in the dirt" guitar riff just rings out a picked-out chord progression, over and over and over again.
Layer in some shoegaze and sonic burt sounds from space, and this one is a low tempo burn.
Atlas Sound : Shelia
Here's another Cox gem that really just comes out of nowhere. On the much better Logos Atlas Sound album (in my opinion, at least), this song sounds like something from the mid 60's. The acoustic guitar drives the song, and then the electric rings in from above near the end. A very simple but eloquent song; the lyrics are good, too.
Deerhunter : Spring Hall Convert
So we've heard a bit of the Everlys, a bit of Lennon, a bit of shoegaze...but where are the Spacemen in all of this? Well, this one, I dare say.
I loved this song when I first discovered Deerhunter. It rings of Sonic Boom and J. Spacemen, with a bit more melody and tempo. It starts slow, and then does the whole burn/escalation thing. The first phase jump happens about 1:41. Then, when you get to about 3:05, the Spacemen 3 effect is in full effect. I love it...I don't know why I like this kind of music so much, but I do. I get goosebumps every time I listen to this song with earbuds in. So check it out with earbuds, too!
I'm confident John would too (and Macca, but I don't know if he's spoken public about it). Well, you are in luck Macca, I know you are reading this one as well, so hurry up and get a Hive account and leave a comment below so we can know your thoughts on Deerhunter and Cox.
That's it for this week's #TTT; thanks for taking a listen, and I hope I was able to share a new tune or two today. Until next #threetunetuesday...
