For this week, which corresponds to my third participation in the initiative, I have brought a Venezuelan singer and group: Evio di Marzo and his Adrelina Caribe, band that had a notable influence on the music of my country, Venezuela, in the 1980s. Although I am not going to expand on a biographical review of either Evio or Adrenalina Caribe; it is necessary to indicate that Evio was the brother of Yordano di Marzo, an important musician from my country, a balladeer with a very long career; although Evio's music, as the name of the group he founded indicates, is more tropical, more Caribbean, and even though I don't much prefer this type of music, I have to admit that he made good songs.
Throughout my adolescence a large part of my income was spent on music, buying posters, records and cassettes. I loved going to the disco stores, and looking for what I heard on the radio, or asking the owners if they had received something new. Regarding Evio di Marzo and his Adrenalina Caribe, I heard them for the first time, like many other bands and singers, on one of the radio stations in the city where I lived. Then I was able to see them in live shows broadcast by some national television stations, however, what caught me about them was some of their songs, their poetry, their sweetness. And how could it be otherwise, I also bought an album from them, the fourth album that Evio di Marzo made; titled precisely: Evio di Marzo - Caribbean Adrenaline, and today also, I have brought you some images of it.
As I already mentioned, this vinyl corresponds to Evio's fourth album. This LP was released in 1987, and when I bought it at the Discotienda, it was not that year, but later, in 1990. At the time I bought it, the price was marked at 350.00 bolívares for that year, which would be equivalent to 8.10 US dollars, which indicates that the inflationary process in my country was quite notorious at that time, (you can consult the source from which I obtained the equivalence in the bibliography of this post). This album is characterized by having a white cover, with black and white photos, the songs in a letter very typical of the eighties, (like a brush stroke), with green and orange colors in beautiful tones.
This acetate was marketed by Sonografica, the other record company (apart from Sonorodven), the most important in Venezuela in the 1980s (there were other record companies, but smaller, more modest). This disc brought its seal of guarantee, as well as a songbook inserted inside. I really like two things about this album: The first, a thought by Evio that is on the back of the cover, which says: “Dream and sing while you can”, which I think has something prophetic, taking into account that he was murdered at the age of 64 (just turned), in 2018, when he was resisting an armed robbery whose intention was to steal his vehicle (you can see his biography in the bibliographic sources section of this publication ). I remember when I read the news on the Internet, I felt pain and sadness because bad people had silenced his voice. The other thing that I like is his songbook, which brings the lyrics of the ten songs that make up the album, of which nine were written and composed by Evio, and the dedication he makes to the children, especially to two of his sons, Rocco and Rossana. It’s a precious detail.
Ahora vamos con mis canciones / Now let's go with my songs
¿De dónde viene tu nombre?
tiene perfume de piel
el color de tu cuerpo
que me embriaga cada vez-
Como botella en el mar
(inmenso mar)
que su destino es la orilla,
arena me convertiré
y de mí te llenarás
hasta el tope, nena.
Mía eres,
tuyo soy, amor...
The first song I want to recommend is a beautiful love ballad: “Where does your name come from? , a beautiful, soft, poetic melody, with simple but honest and sweet lyrics, which at the time I liked a lot, because it reflected a beautiful love, like the one I think we all want to feel at some point in our lives. Look at this piece of song, and then I leave you the video:
Where does your name come from?
has skin perfume
the color of your body
that gets me drunk every time
Like a bottle in the sea
(vast sea)
that their destination is the beach,
I will become sand
and you will be filled with me
to the top, baby.
You’re mine,
I’m yours, love...
The next song that I want to recommend is “Muñeca de Porcelana”, a curious melody that is halfway between a ballad and a dance song, which Evio (I understand) dedicates to Rossana, one of his daughters; in fact, in the video he made at the time there are shots of the girl. I like this theme, because the lyrics are beautiful, and it has some very nice moments, melodically speaking. Here I leave this video, which has a very eighties aesthetic.
The third theme that I bring you is also curious, because it is a lullaby in bolero time, which I understand Evio dedicated to Rocco, another of his sons. Let us remember that the bolero is a Latin American musical genre, whose theme is love and spite; however, Evio puts a twist on it and makes a lullaby to this beat. I thought it was a beautiful song, and the lyrics are comforting, also Evio's voice sounds especially sweet when singing it. Here I leave this song for you to enjoy.
This has been my contribution to this great initiative of my friend
, I hope you liked it and it has served to remind you of a singer and a band that marked part of the music of the 80s in Venezuela, such as Evio di Marzo and Caribbean Adrenaline. See you next week.
