Human beings are emotional creatures. Although we usually justify our decisions with pure logic, true inspiration always sprouts from the heart, doesn't it? Our feelings are directly awakened through several channels: movies, food, play, relationships, architecture, nature, plus the avalanche of words that we encounter daily in various media such as the Internet, speeches, books, gadgets, etc.
However, words alone from those reliable sources are simply not the only ones responsible for triggering emotions. Why not? Something crucial is obviously missing here. In fact, if there's one significant factor to add to that list, it would be no other than SOUND - but not just any random sound, instead we're talking about the harmonious reverberations originating from musical instruments!
I’m absolutely blown away by the acoustic tunes resonating from these creative equipment, no doubt about that. Hence, whenever I get extra time, I purposely explore music shops within commercial malls or other standalone outlets selling musical instruments.
As soon as I step inside the entrance doors of these phenomenal establishments, my entire face immediately lights up, complete with raised eyebrows, and wearing a gigantic smile that almost reaches my ears, haha. Imagine being one of the loyal customers who always lifts up the favorable ambiance of these spectacular spaces (not an easy task though).
Apart from being obsessed with electronic devices like mobile phones, tablets, computers, and their accessories, these musical depots are apparently one of my favorite hangouts - where I can sample, play, tinker, and get entertained by the heavenly smorgasbord of their musical paraphernalia.
I could surely linger in these interesting environments for as long as I please. Wouldn't you?
Based on my personal experiences, I've discovered special moments when distinctive sounds from different musical instruments evoke certain types of emotions. They encompass but are not restricted to these identifiable elements:
Chord Sounds:
Chords or the structured combinations of various notes typically produce unique sounds that are pleasing or depressing to the ears.
Major chords tend to put me in a positive, delightful, and excited mood while minor chords provoke tension, fear, sorrow, suspense, or a sense of mystery. Yet, I do enjoy listening to an artistic combination of these major and minor keys for the music’s full dramatic effect.
Rhythm and Tempo:
These factors determine the desired speed of the musical rendition. Depending on how fast or slow the pacing of the musical instrument plays, the resulting feelings are summoned.
Dynamic and speedy sounds put me in a danceable spirit, filling my body with energy, joy, and intensity. On the other hand, snail-paced movements invite me to relax, reflect, and be serene.
Timbre (Character):
The recognizable audio characteristic of a musical instrument produces a certain allure and ring to it that's comparable to an individual’s specific personality.
For instance, a violin’s sound creates feelings of warmth for me while a saxophone’s tones release a vibrant emotion.
Melody and Pitch:
Pitch is where the highness or lowness of a sound is measured, while melodic qualities evoke different emotions subjected to how the music is being played.
A high pitch energizes and transports me to the world of happiness whereas a low pitch generates a state of misery, pain, or regret. Likewise, relying on how the entire musical composition is organized, some melodies catapult me to interesting atmospheres carrying different emotions.
Overall Expression:
Depending on how the musician delivers and performs his pieces, various emotional experiences are attracted. This now relies on the artistic creativity of the composer, bringing listeners to witness musical stories of varying degrees.
An ideal demonstration for the amazing features of musical acoustics is when I enjoy the electrifying performance of a full symphony orchestra. With the majority of musical instruments present, it's one of life’s most incredible, astonishing, and enriching experiences of sounds.
Moreover, if there’s one music genre that I'm really fond of, it's jazz, especially the cheerful types. I don't know about you, but everytime I listen to musical instruments that play the distinctive sounds of upbeat jazz, I couldn't be more alive and kicking. Would you feel the same way?
As most of you are already aware, words are fundamentally not sufficient to rejuvenate the range of feelings in the emotional spectrum. Captivating sounds of music must therefore exist.
What’s the musical instrument of your choice? Which acoustical qualities are you keen about depending on the particular emotion you would like to feel? Are there productive behaviors you intend these sounds to influence?
What about the instrumental prowess of a grand piano? Does its enchanting musical sound stimulate your emotions?
