Rock Classics is back, this time it took only 4 months
Well I invented this tag long ago and am now happy to post to it 3-4 times a year. Glad to have folks such as and
who do this more frequently. Maybe a reason that I think having covered most of my all-time Rock heroes from the past and I would like to stay below the 1990ies threshold at least. If you like that music feel free to check #Rockclassics tag, there are not that many who use it so you can get a decent pictures on all previous posts.
Today - Rainbow
A classic band I liked when I was young but they never been the top favourites compared to the likes of Foreigner, Journey, Toto, Metallica or Helloween. However they made history and for sure deserve a spot in that series. So here we go, the entry song was from a live concert here in Munich with their first singer, a legend. Originally a British band more or less "owned" bei Ritchie Blackmore, he started the project back in 1975 with a singer many might remember and love - Ronnie James Dio! Dio stayed until 1978 before he left the band to join Black Sabbath - another one I still have not covered I think, like DIO as well, coming soon.
I first came across them later with the song "Stone Cold" one of these typical 1980ies rock ballads - was ok but did not hit me from my chair.
Some Rainbow facts
Due to our friends from Wikipedia we could take a complete look into history, which we avoid though but show some snippets (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_(rock_band)):
Rainbow's early work primarily featured mystical lyrics with a neoclassical metal style, then went in a more pop-rock oriented direction following Dio's departure from the group.Three British musicians joined in 1979—singer Graham Bonnet, keyboardist Don Airey and then-former Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover—and this line-up gave the band their commercial breakthrough with the single "Since You Been Gone" from their fourth studio album Down to Earth.
In 1984 the time came to and end but as usual in the industry they or Mr. Blackmore did a reunion with limited success in 1993 and again 2015 (still playing the old man rock concert gigs).
Remarkably they sold more than 20 million records worldwide which is a better number as I expected. Anyone out there a Rainbow fan? Let me know your thoughts and what you experienced with the band in concerts, your first bought vinyl and such.
I am still not sure what my favourite is by Rainbow, considering between the two following:
But after listening again I vote for "Since You Been Gone":
