My coworker came in this morning and almost instantly turned on the radio: “That’s better. It was way too quiet.”
I told him there was plenty of noise.
“What, the train outside grumbling?”
“Not just that. Air leaks in the shop, wind blowing through the walls, my pen on paper, my keyboard clacking, footsteps…”
He chuckles as if I made a joke.
...
It wasn't a joke.
It's not really that it's too quiet, it's that he doesn't like the noise in his head.
He's not the first person I've met to make this mistake.
Why are so many people afraid to deal with what's within them?
I honestly believe there would be a lot less strife in the world if people could learn to quiet their own thoughts rather than make enough noise to down them out.
