Week 06, 2023: Shallow depth of field/ Poca profundidad de campo
I don't really like using the maximum aperture when I have a lens that has 1.8 or 2.8 aperture, I always prefer an f4. My friend Lorena went to our monthly meeting and when the golden hour came I placed her against a tree that had beautiful pods that shone like gold in the light of the setting sun.
No me gusta mucho usar la apertura máxima cuando tengo un lente que tenga 1.8 o 2.8 de diafragma, prefiero una f4 siempre. Mi amiga Lorena fue a nuestra reunión mensual y cuando llegó la hora dorada la coloqué contra un árbol que tenía hermosas vainas que brillaban como oro a la luz del sol poniente.
Week 07, 2023: Chair/ Silla
I went to the coast in search of fishermen and their folding chairs. I found this contamination in the form of a chair in one of the puddles that abound in this rocky strip; someone used it to sit and cool their feet while looking at the sea and left it there.
Fui a la costa en busca de pescadores y sus sillas plegables. Esta contaminación en forma de silla la encontré en uno de los charcos que abundan en esta franja rocosa, alguien la usó para sentarse y refrescarse los pies mientras miraba el mar y la dejó ahí.
Week 08, 2023: Line from a song/ Línea de una canción
I decided to pay tribute to a universal Cuban song such as "Guantanamera" that really achieved world fame thanks to a version by The Sandpipers in 1966. My model is Mary, she is a native of the eastern part of the island where the aboriginal genes that still survive They resisted the extermination of the Spanish conquest 500 years ago. The scene is a tribute to Humberto Solás's 1968 film "Lucía," which tells stories of three women named Lucía in different periods of Cuban history. The frame I am trying to reproduce is about the last Lucía, a victim of machismo in a changing society. The song Guantanamera consists of a very simple chorus of only two words: "guajira (peasant) Guantanamera" and then come the verses of José Martí.
Decidí rendir homenaje a una canción cubana universal como es "Guantanamera" que realmente alcanzó fama mundial gracias a una versión de The Sandpipers en 1966. Mi modelo es Mary, ella es oriunda de la zona oriental de la isla donde aún sobreviven los genes aborígenes que resistieron el exterminio de la conquista española hace 500 años. La escena es un homenaje a la película de Humberto Solás "Lucía", de 1968, que cuenta historias de tres mujeres llamadas Lucía en diferentes períodos de la historia de Cuba. El fotograma que intento reproducir es sobre la última Lucía, víctima del machismo en una sociedad cambiante. La canción Guantanamera consta de un estribillo muy sencillo de sólo dos palabras: "guajira(campesina) Guantanamera" y luego vienen los versos de José Martí.
Week 09, 2023: Macro
A while ago I answered this same "Macro" challenge with a similar character, so I went back for them. It's incredible how when you look at the puddles you don't see any activity and suddenly when you see the first one you can't stop discovering more and more of these little ones. The size of this hermit crab without its shell is approximately a quarter of an inch, I have not seen it larger than that, so that must be its limit or when it reaches that size it will throw itself into the sea. I sat on the edge of one of the puddles, picked one up and carried it to a flat surface to wait for it to lose its stage fright and I could do my job. It was returned to the same puddle after the session was over, undamaged!
Hace un tiempo respondí a este mismo reto "Macro" con un personaje similar, así que volví a por ellos. Es increíble como cuando miras los charcos no ves ninguna actividad y de repente cuando ves el primero no puedes parar de descubrir cada vez más de estos pequeños. El tamaño de este cangrejo ermitaño sin su caparazón es de aproximadamente un cuarto de pulgada, no he visto más grande que eso, por lo que debe ser su límite o llegando a ese tamaño se lanzará al mar. Me senté en el borde de uno de los charcos, cogí uno y lo llevé a una superficie plana para esperar a que perdiera el miedo escénico y yo pudiera hacer mi trabajo. Se devolvió al mismo charco una vez terminada la sesión, ¡sin daños!
Week 10, 2023: Complementary colors/ Colores complementarios
This session was not planned this way, but I am happy with the result. Talia is a makeup artist (as well as a clarinetist and model) and she called me to take some photos of her work in that regard. For certain reasons, she wasn't wearing makeup when I arrived, and we didn't have much time left to create something with quality, so I used my two flashes with two colored gels and here is the result. I was very lucky to work with her again, she is one of my muses.
Esta sesión no fue planeada de esta manera, pero estoy contento con el resultado. Talia es maquilladora (además de clarinetista y modelo) y me llamó para tomar algunas fotos de su trabajo en ese sentido. Por ciertas razones, ella no estaba maquillada cuando llegué, y no nos quedaba mucho tiempo para crear algo con calidad, así que usé mis dos flashes con dos geles de colores y aquí está el resultado. Tuve mucha suerte de volver a trabajar con ella, es una de mis musas.
Some photos correspond better than others to each challenge posed...I will embrace imperfection!
