In this age of mass production and cheap plastic "things" it's easy to forget there was a time when people took pride in making works by hand. These Nativity scene figures belong to my mother. I saw them on a display in her house when I last visited her. She had just found them in a box in her cupboards. They had belonged to her mother and she remembered seeing them at Christmas as a girl. My mother is now 90 so the figures are at least that old. As I looked closer the craftsmanship of these figures became apparent.
I am not an expert but I don't have to be to see their beauty. Each figure stands about 10 cm tall. They are made of tin, cloth, wood, porcelain and glass and the detail is incredible.
They have been hand painted hand embroidered and gilted. What would a child today think of there exquisite figures.?
To me they speak of a time when things were made with pride and to last for generations.
I hope you enjoyed seeing these little marvels of craftsmanship.
