Hello to all!
Today I will show second step of the Camino de Santiago, from Villafria to Burgos through sierra Atapuerca.
(pictures from Wikipedia)
Let's start from Villafria. Here San Juan de Ortega monastery. It was built around 1142 by Saint John of Ortega, with the help of Domingo de la Calzada.
It was a refuge for pilgrims but it was abandoned in nineteenth century.
Here exterior view:
And the fatiscent interior:
Let's enter the Sierra Atapuerca, a typical example of Mesetas: a large area of high and fairly flat land, dry and with hot temperature!
Here we are at the top of Mesetas. There are very often crosses and stones, to indicate the right way to pilgrims:
Temperature was very high, and we were looking for fresh place to get repair from the sunrays:
Here bad luck: the shutter of one of my camera has broken: it is why you see this white zone in the picture:
My second camera still worked well:
Finally, we passed through the Sierra Atapuerca, we are approaching to Burgos!
Here a storks nest, very common in this area.
And this is first view of gothic Burgos Cathedral.
Here the Sacramental door, one of the best Classicism Gothic sculptural set of the 13th century in Spain. It is dedicated to the archaic theme of Christ in Majesty:
(my camera was broken, and less younger of you can remember I couldn't see pictures I was taking, and the camera apparently worked good, so I noticed the damage by chance, because I took the film off the camera to check it, and I noticed the broken shutter only at the end of the day...)
Here the interior of that Cathedral: it blew me away! Here the altarpiece in the main chapel (there was also a sort of rainbow created by sunrays through windows):
The cathedral has a sense of verticality that make the building look taller.
And here another view of Burgos: Arco de Santa María and the main square:
Analogic pictures taken with two Nikon FE2 cameras (one broken, one fine), august 2010.
