Today I will show you the beauty of my birthplace region (Liguria, Italy), at sunset (in front of Mediterranean sea, sunsets are stunning in winter). I took these shots in Lerici, near the big town of 'La Spezia', there are many small beautiful cities: Lerici with its great castle in front of the sea, and (faraway) Portovenere, with its church and the typical houses, surrounded by Christmas lights in this time of the year.
Lerici castle has been built in 1152 and was used to help control the entrance of the Gulf of La Spezia.
You can see also Palmaria and Tino islands (from right to left):
Here the Gulf of La Spezia at sunset:
And here Portovenere town. Portovenere name derives from the ancient Portus Veneris, probably born in the middle of the 1st century BC. The name refers to a temple to the goddess Venus sited on the promontory where the church of Peter the Apostle now stands. You can see the church on the left side of the town, in front of Palmaria island, at the end of the peninsula.
Palmaria island has high cliffs and many caves, it is a natural protected park and there are only some military buildings and fort (they have a great historical interest) and several bunkers from the Second World War.
