Original image
Following on from a recent post showing my workflow explaining how I achieved a particular image I thought I would show another workflow, this time for a composite image, starting off with an image of a static aircraft taken at RAF Coningsby. The image was shot through the wire fence just outside the Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight hangar.
Cut out and creating prop blur
The first task was to cut out the aircraft, removing the background and landing gear (undercarriage) which are retracted when in flight. The next part - adding a blur motion to the propeller to give the impression of flight - was the most difficult. I added a blur to each of the propeller blades and than added a grey circle with a yellow border. I created this on a separate layer so that I could play with the opacity on the next step.
Stock image of White Cliffs with Spitfire added
I searched for a stock image of the White Cliffs of Dover and, after finding a few I found one that thought would work. This one I added as a layer below the aircraft (and prop). The image of Dover was a modern photo and although I wasn't too happy with how modern it looked I thought that the final process would camouflage the anachronism.
Final image
I added a little more cloud on the horizon, and went with a mild sepia toning to give a more realistic feel. It also covers up a bit of the modern housing. I finally adjusted the opacity of the propeller and finally the image was finished. The whole process took me around an hour. What's your thought on the final result? Does it work?
About me:
I can mostly be found shooting models, aviation, motorsports and, when I can, wildlife. But I enjoy most aspects of photography. You can find more of my work on the links below.
