Fruška Gora - Fall Edition (Travel in Serbia)
Fruška Gora is an island mountain located in Vojvodina, Serbia. It is called an island mountain because it was one of the islands of the Pannonian Sea some 600.000 years ago. Pannonian Sea is long gone, and Vojvodina is mostly a flat plain so Fruška Gora with it's 400-500 meters is a mountain and Crveni Čot is the highest peak at 539 meters.
The slopes of Fruška Gora are perfectly suited for growing grapes so the region is famous for it's wineries. There are more 60 family wine cellars. They produce few varieties of wine but the most famous is Bermet. Bermet was served across the palaces of Europe and was also found in the wreck of the "Titanic".
Fruška Gora is the oldest National Park in Serbia. 90% of it is covered by forest. Fruška gora has the highest concentration of linden forest in Europe. There are over 200 protected plant species and over 1700 species of fungi (click to see the fungi photos ).
One of the advantages of Fruška Gora is that it is close to two biggest Serbian Cities, Novi Sad and Belgrade. It has a good amount of marked hiking trails and a lot of them are great for people that love nature but are not heavy into hiking. Most of the trails are marked as easy or moderate. And a lot of them are marked. See the heart sign down below.
Another good thing is that you can just stop on one of the many picnic areas go few meters in to the forest, and you will most probably find a marked trail. Easy way to spend few hours in the forest.
From time to time my photographer friends and me manage to organize and go on this type of one day trips (not often enough i would say). After week of delays, we managed to get together last Sunday. As we did no planing or research, decision was made to start from the town Vrdnik.
Vrdnik
Vrdnik is famous for it's thermal baths. It has good number of all kind of different accommodation, from hotels and spas, bungalows or small villas. So it could be a good place to look for accommodation if you are planing stay in Fruška Gora for a few days.
As we had no plan, the first stop was a bit more touristy place, and it was Sunday, so the number of people was a bit more than we hoped for, but it was nothing crazy. The trail leads to Vrdnička kula. They believe the tower was first built in the time of Roman empire somewhere between year 274 - 282. In the year 1315. it is mentioned for the first time in Hungarian documents as a fortified town. It was destroyed and rebuild several times in few different wars.
All left form it now is this watch tower and few old walls. The tower is restaurated and has stairs build so there is an access to the upper part of it. There were lines to go up, so we were not bothered :)
After that we continued to viewpoint Zmajevac, but there was a good amount of people so we continued driving till the next rest stop. And as i mentioned, just few steps in to the forest and you are on one of the trails.
And we got there at the right time. Sun was at the right spot and the place looked magical.
The days are now short, so we went on a short walk-around and had to go back.
Preparing for a group selfie.
And all i have to show is this photo of a screen :D
