Getting an early start to the day
and I woke up this past Sunday with a goal. We were to arrive at The West Virginia Renaissance Festival around noon. We were just under two hours away from the isolated location near Lewisburg, WV. The drive was not that long-drawn, and we didn't have to get up at the crack of dawn. You would think that my girlfriend could have stayed awake the entire time. Not a chance, a siesta was needed. Occasionally she would peak one eye to make sure I was driving still.
We arrived at The WV Renaissance Festival post noon. We parked on the top of a tremendous hill and wandered to the ticket booth to purchase two for $32. Once inside, we quickly were enamored with the place.
We were eager to explore and shortly discovered a seat on a haystack. There was a central arena-type area circled by many of these haystacks. Knights were jousting on powerful horses while announcers spoke. A royal family and at least a dozen other characters were in attendance. The most powerful watcher of all was the sun, we knew right away that we should have worn sunscreen. Despite my lady being the most beautiful elf, she was not invulnerable to the sun's UV. My forehead was a glaring target for rays of shine. We knew our fate from the start.
We went to the opposite side of the arena after jousting finished. There we witnessed a loud man do some amazing things.
The worldβs first and only wooden Wheel of Death is a truly revolutionary act! Featuring death-defying feats three stories up, Ichabod Wainwright will risk his life leaping, flipping, juggling flaming hatchets, and much more for your amusement. Source
He was super talented. I watched him push his kid around in a stroller later in the day. I find it admirable that the man regularly takes huge risks to provide for his family.
The two of us moseyed on up to a new area called Prancing Pub which featured an outdoor bar and performance stage. There were at least 40 or 50 roosters running around free in this location. We watched a couple of drunk pirates. Their names were the Naughty Nauticals and they did sign language and ate fire. Later we had the pleasure of listening to The Langler's Ball which played authentic Irish music.
The area of the festival was filled with old architecture. I was fascinated by the feel of the place. It did make you feel like you jumped back in time.
There were plenty of places to take a break and eat. I preferred continuing to move, so I continued to eat my chicken legs even while walking up the steepest of the hills. The wood was ultra palatable, but I was disheartened by the larger turkey legs being out of stock. The view from where we ate was beautiful and the weather was flawless all day long.
The well-kept land had cool setups all around with various stages. One end was home to a pirate ship and shop. There was a pond with an actual mermaid in it down at the bottom. Stages were plenty and there was a schedule to it all that actually made sense. Each show had multiple showings so that you could see it all. You just had to be willing to traverse the varied terrain. Luckily there was zero mud and you could find shade if you went searching. There was no wildlife outside of these four majestic birds perched on posts halfway up to the highest point.
I just have to stop for a bit and show you how amazing was looking. She worked very hard on her braids. She wore a leaf and stem crown with a jeweled crescent moon. Her elf ears attracted a lot of attention. She wore crescent moon earrings to match the crown. Her butterfly necklace reminded me how soft she is under her elf exterior. Her dress and belt formed a truly authentic look. The custom crocheted armlets that she crafted herself solidified her full outfit to be something I will never forget bearing witness to.
There was a secluded trail that connected two of the back parts of the festival. It was a great place to find some silence and of course take more photographs. The halfway sign reminded me to watch thy step.
Another impressive performance was put on for us by none other than Galiana the Living Fountain. She looked like a real statue and danced slowly to peaceful music. She was parctically performing tai chi and managed to trick your eyes into believing that her mind/body were connected to the waters in the fountain.
There was live music in the same area as the fountain. We listened to a powerful set from Valkyrik. These two girls sang, chanted, and played the drums for Norse songs which they wrote themselves. It was remarkable how talented they were as a duo. At one point they were starting one of their songs, and it slowly began to drizzle out of seemingly nowhere. It was a scorcher out that day, so the generous rain from the Norse gods was a blessing. The girls continued to play their music, and once that song ended the rain ceased.
We did just about everything that this exciting festival in our Wild, Wonderful state of WV had to offer. I am so glad that we took the time out of 's birthday weekend to go to the WV Ren Fest. It had such an awesome time and I know she did too.
Just before we left, we noticed that we had parked next to an infinite field of green. We were only looking at the grounds towards the base of the hill during our arrival. I am not sure how we failed to notice the artistic back drop at the beginning, I guess we were too excited about getting inside the festival. When leaving, we did manage to snap some mesmerizing photographs just before getting into the car.
We were both exhausted and sunburnt once the Ren Fest was over. The thing is, I still had to drive home for nearly 2 hours. We made it just fine and were relieved to finally have the night to rest. Except we somehow gained the energy to go do yoga on Magic Island together before we began our chill time.
Thanks for checking out my blog ππ€
The West Virginia Renaissance Festival was unexpectedly one of the most fun events that I have been to in a while. I was happy to see get to live out her elf dreams. The acts were of real value and provided an enjoyable show all day long. I am happy to have this memory in my mental bank now.
