It was a bit windy yesterday, however it was pleasant so thought I'd head out over to the peek district, I'd been wanting to go back to Higgar Tor and Carl Wark for a bit so thought yesterday was as good as any other.
On my way, I was driving down a road which was 40mph, as I'm part way down, there was a speed camera van parked on the opposite side of the road, and a car doing 30mph in front (when I caught him up), anyhow, I'm thinking to myself, why are you doing 30 when it's 40 on here, little did I know (until after), they have changed the speed limits, and took all the signs down, so unintentionally, I was speeding, so that's so nice of Sheffield county council. I looked at the road signs at the bottom of the the road, as you come on to it from a roundabout, and they are just 7.5 tonne signs. So not sure if I have got a speeding ticket or not, we shall wait and see.
As I got to my destination, I set off walking, and within 2 minutes a kestrel was hovering around 20-30 feet from where I was standing, I was just surprised as to how close the bird was, I always like to see a Kestrel lol.
Looking down towards my location, Carl Wark.
After clambering down some rocks, I found a pathway leading down to Carl Wark, the destination I wanted to get to, reason being will become quite apparent shortly.
As you get near to Carl Wark, the patch slopes upwards onto it, where you are presented with a very ancient wall. Doing a bit of research, the wall dates back between the 5th and 8th century BC, experts think that the wall was part of an Iron age hill fort.
On thing I did notice, if you look centre right, there is a stone on the floor and it has quite a recent chip on it, I just hope that this was there before and no idiots have been pushing the stones off the wall, that's been there for nearly 2500-2800 years.
Looking from Carl Wark to Higgar Tor.
The wind was gusting to about 34-35 miles per hour, I had my drone on me, which is the little 249g DJI Mini 2, and I was in two minds whether to fly it, as usually I don't take it up in winds stronger than 28mph, there's films on youtube that I'd seen which they take this same drone up in winds a lot stronger than 34mph, so I thought I'd give it a fly.
A lovely little drone shot of the prehistoric wall on Carl Wark.
The above shot reminds me of something from a scifi film, it just needs a big UFO hovering over the top of it.
The above shot has both the wall and and Higgar Tor in it.
I had a steady drive back to the car, again, this was more a scouting mission than a proper shoot, which I am glad about as I'm not very happy with the shots I got, I am going to have to go back early in the morning for the shots I want, as the sun sets behind Higgar Tor, and didn't want to shoot facing into the sun.
On my way back, I had to stop to shoot this pic, the hill in the middle is HT and the lower one centre left is Carl Wark.
Overall I enjoyed the day, took my time and just took in the surrounding area, the sounds of birds, kestrels hovering and just being out in the open did me good, mentally at least lol.
Pictures shot using a Sony A7iii with a Canon 24-105mm F/4.0 L Lens (adapted), also used a Samyang 14mm F/2.8 wide angle lens.
Drone shots done using a DJI Mini 2.
I really hope you've enjoyed this blog, thanks for reading.
All the best :-)
