On April 12th, 1861 at 4:30am, Confederate forces fired upon Fort Sumter, beginning the Civil War. Fort Sumter protected the city of Charleston from naval invasion, but today, it is a national monument and stands as a reminder of the Civil War.
We needed to take a ferry to get to the fort. The whole island has a very heavy and dark feeling to it. The buildings on the island have signs of destruction and wear.
As I walked around, I could only imagine the craziness that went on during the attack. The whole island is lined with so many different cannons. It must have been a very destructive site to behold.
