There are many deserted places where it's the animals who domintates and humans are scarse. One of these places I think must be the small island Ile aux Cocos in the Indian Ocean. This tiny, unspoiled island is definitive off the beaten track and hardly visible on a map. The island is part of Roderique, which is an island belonging to Mauritius.

No humans are living here. The island is a sanctuary for thousand of sea birds including the Fairy Tern, the Noddy, the Lesser Noddy and the Sooty Tern.

The photos shows the variety of birds nesting on the island. Some will lay their eggs on a branch, some directly on the ground. That's why people who wants to visit, must join a guided tour. You have to watch out not to step on an egg.

This is a Fairy Tern. They have pure white feathers and if you look closely, you will see that they have a black circle around the eyes, which make the eyes look larger. This bird is special because of the fact that they lay their eggs directly on the branch.

This little Fairy Tern chick is sitting on the branch waiting for the parents to return.

A beautiful, tropical island with an amazing colony of birds and where it is possible to get very close to them. You can walk right beneath a branch or beside them on the path.
