A boat or a sea plane is necessary to travel to the Yasawa Islands in western Fiji. It is an archipelago of many volcanic islands, each one more beautiful that the next. I jumped in a small motorboat and left the main island of Nadi behind in order to venture out to these beautiful islands. I brought my underwater camera so I could explore above and below the clear waters here. I ended up of Wayalailai Isalnd, at a small resort run by the local villagers. In between sips of the local drink kava, I spent my time hiking, snorkeling, and photographing it all.
I used an ultra wideangle to get this over/under split shot of the beautiful underwater scene mixed with the majestic stony outcroppings of Wayalailai Island.
After a pretty serious hike with a bit of scrambling I made it up to the summit to take in this view.
There were many caves, caverns, and swim throughs in the reef surrounding the island. Light filtering in through skylights always makes for a good photo opportunity. If only a shark would swim through the light beams...
Shark!
The sky just seems to go forever here and the water just beckons to be experienced.
Wherever I go I try to get to know the local people. These two kids hiked with me all the way to the top and didn't mind posing for a selfie after.
Sitting on the precipice.
Feeling good. Notice my hiking shoes.... local sandals, no Hawaiian would leave home without them.
