Over the last few days on safari here in Kenya, I have had the opportunity to photograph my favorite bird several times. This is the lilac-breasted roller. It is found in East Africa and is always a show stopper. I always tell people that a safari in Africa will turn just about anyone into a bird enthusiast, and the roller is one of the main reasons.
Take a look at just how colorful this bird is. I'm shooting with a Canon 5d mark ii with an L series 100-400mm lens. All of these shots were taken at 400mm.
We usually go out on an early morning game drive and then again for a late afternoon, sunset game drive. Not only is this when the animals are most active, but you are also blessed with some incredible light.
Now who wants to go on a safari?! And if you can believe it, the lilac-breasted roller is even more beautiful when it opens its wings to fly. Something you just have to see.
