It was supposed to be misty this morning, but I woke up to bright sunshine. The sunshine inspired me to get up and go for a walk.
I chose a wood called 'Ten Acre Wood' just outside my village.
I parked just off the busy main road in a small lay-by. It’s a little hairy scary getting to the stone entrance to the woods, as cars whizz past quite quickly. When I was learning to drive, I was told to slow down if I saw pedestrians, just in case they stepped into the road. Nobody seems to give a shit these days. Anyway, I managed to enter the woods and followed the footpath uphill.
I spotted a couple of men putting out flags. They do orienteering here, so I presume there’s a race on soon. Good luck to them, as the footpaths are very uneven. I nearly slipped several times just walking, with brambles and stones sticking up from the ground.
Along the bottom of the wood, there are some lovely views, especially now that the dandelions have come through. I think dandelions are very undervalued.
At the end of the main footpath, there is a golf course. I was tempted to follow the public footpath across it, but there were golfers about, so I didn’t fancy being hit by a golf ball. A jogger arrived who was facing the same predicament. I left her looking for an alternative route and went back to the safety of the woods.
Ironically, I then found a couple of stray golf balls. How bad are the golfers? I couldn’t be bothered to walk back, so I decided to take them with me and place them on the golf course in my village.
It looks as though the bilberries are just coming through. The berries are pink at the moment. Later in the summer, they will turn dark purple.
Even though it was quite sunny in the woods, I was surprised there weren’t many bluebells in the area. I did stumble across a few, along with forget-me-nots. Perhaps the soil isn’t right for them.
I decided I’d better return to my car as it was getting warmer. I’d done a bit of grocery shopping before my walk, so I didn’t want my groceries to get too hot.
I think there is a geocache in this wood, so I might return over the weekend, but I will park further down the road where it is safer.
