I normally describe myself as a lightpainting photographer but at this time of year in the UK, it gets dark so late in the evening I have to stay up in to the early hours to stand any chance of getting a photo. I pine for darker nights but they ain't going to happen till the end of August!
So during these summer months I look for other photography projects and last night, I dipped my toe back in to landscape photography.
Landscape in my opinion requires a lot of commitment. Huge amounts in fact. Weather conditions are rarely exactly how you want them to be with either not enough clouds or too many. It could be too windy stood on a hill trying to avoid the camera shakes. It could be overcast with dull flat light. The best shots are mostly at the crack of dawn and I hate early mornings! And then there's the gear. I see a lot of photographers using expensive filter systems which would be nice to have but there ain't no way I'm spending nearly £1000 for pieces of glass!!
Last night, and I visited Flamborough Head on the North Yorkshire coast of England.
Spot the Inksurgeon stood on a hill trying to avoid crashing his drone competion
I shot this at the end of the evening and I was utterly exhausted. I'd been down at the bottom of the cliffs below and the climb back up top is a killer! I carried way too much gear as usual and by the time I arrived at this point my photography skills felt all but useless! But somehow despite dripping with sweat, legs feeling like jelly and arms that could barely raise, I managed to bag this sunset with my new Sony 20mm f1.8 FE lens. I'm impressed.
Take me to the beach
Before I managed to wreck my muscles, we walked on to the beach below the cliffs. The descent is a killer on the knees down hundreds of steps. It's a wonder I managed to avoid slipping on this skid-fest at low tide!
The Sleeping Dinosaur
It's probably been shot to death a million times but no visit to Flamborough is complete without a shot of the Sleeping Dinosaur. Hopefully, you can see the resmblance....
Photo Post???
Now this is something I've never seen before. The Instagram / Facebook generation of millenials can now place their phone in the slot provided on this post and shoot a selfie of themselves. Just one HUGE problem; there's a cliff with a 100ft drop in front of this post and I'm amazed no millenials have been killed taking selfies!!
Huge Skies
On the walk back up the hill from the Sleeping Dinosaur is this hint of the lighthouse. I like a bit of minimalism occasionally.
That damned iPhone again
On the exodus back up the hill, I took an alternative route which looked less steep. As I staggered up, I looked backwards and saw this PoV. Not wanting to get all the camera gear set up to shoot it, I quickly snapped this with an iPhone 12 Pro Max. It's annoyingly good....
Cliffs
Another shot with the iPhone and the 14mm equivalent wide lens makes me want to go out and spend £1400 on a Sony 14mm prime lens..... Bugger!
We shall be returning to Flamborough. But not today. My knees wouldn't thank me for it!!
About me:
I usually specialise in shooting lightpainting images but occasionally dabble in urbex and artistic model photography. I'm always on the lookout for someone to collaborate with; please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to create art.
