I got out of our airbnb still dozy from last night's bad sleep but I knew exactly where to go. Chania is a very familiar town and I could find Splantzia Square even with my eyes closed! This time though, I wasn't going there to admire the only church in Greece that has both a bell tower and a minaret, neither the centenarian plane tree in the middle of the square. I headed straight to the traditional bakery shop and its much needed delicacies for a well deserved, bountiful breakfast!
We had arrived in the middle of the night and our last meal was more than 14 hours ago so you can understand my fixation to the pastry in front of me :)
After our breakfast we were ready for the first walk in the town. The day was November 2th and it was still summer in Greece! It was kind of weird since we were on our way for an absolutely winterish job, the olive's harvest but we took advantage of the good weather for some sightseeing and travel mood!
As I told you in the first post about that trip, we left Nafplio to go to the east side of Crete, where our olive groves are. The obvious route would have been through Athens and the port of Piraeus (screenshot below). The trip would have lasted around 20 hours that way. Instead we avoided the big city and we went south to a very small and scenic port that connects the mainland with the west side of Crete (Gythio - Kissamos). That way we kept moving from one beautiful town to the next and transformed a procedural trip into a 5 days excursion :)
Now, as I write those words 17 days later, that day looks so distant. We still haven't picked any olives but at least we had some much needed rain and it is actually the first day that feels like proper autumn. Both necessary conditions for the harvest!
On the other hand, visiting the place that used to be your home for almost a decade, is a true mind game. It is hard to tell if you are visiting or if you just returned.
Nevertheless I didn't know all that when I was looking at the Venetian lighthouse and wandered in the old town of Chania.
I was just on my way!
