I could not have chosen a more misleading shot to be the cover image of this post. But from the moment I took it, I knew that this would be the one! The truth though is that this was the only sign of abandonment I saw while wandering around the village.
Dimitsana is a wealthy place. The wonderful stone built houses indicate a wealthy past and the modern tourism provides a major cash flow into the village's economy.
We did our part contributing in the local economy, having our lunch there, after enjoying a long walk at the streets of the village and before continuing our trip. Take a look yourself, it is an amazing settlement indeed :)
As much as I enjoyed the village, I couldn't help noticing the impact of excessive tourism on it. You won't see it at the pictures but I felt it all around me as I was walking there. And I kept thinking what a good decision was to visit it on a random weekday away from holidays and weekends, it would have been unbearable otherwise!
On the advantages of visiting touristic places is that a lot of restaurants were open, giving us plenty of options to choose from. Which is very much appreciated when you are on the road and hungry :)
The breathtaking location on a mountain hillside at almost 1.000 meters (more than 3.000 feet) altitude, gives wonderful sights all over and adds a lot to the aesthetic value of the village and the pleasure to be there. And a lot of trails in the forest and a ski centre near by, gives a lot of things to do for the visitors and guests!
Myself I was just passing by, taking pictures and breathing mountainous air!
Overall it was a lovely stop in our trip and although I didn't feel the desire to stay longer, I would like to visit it one more time earlier in the day so that I can take a few more photos with the morning light!
But it is nice to leave loose ends behind, isn't it?
Especially when it come to travels :)
