I know that this is not a catchy way to start a post but Karpenisi is a town with no virtues at all!
Small in size, with unpleasant street planning and uninteresting architecture gives very little opportunities for sight seeing or even a remotely scenic walk. Yet, it is full of hotels and restaurants, indisputable sign of vivid tourism activity.
Why is that?
Why all those people visit every year this rather distasteful settlement when Greece has so many beautiful towns to take a trip?
Are they out of their minds?
I have travelled all over Greece to famous and less known destinations, at the islands and the mountains, during summer, fall, winter and spring and I have never found it so difficult, to take a few decent pictures of a place! I am embarrassed to say that the 5 pictures above was the best I could do after a lot of time wandering around!
And let me tell you that I am not used to such poor results, not at all :(
It is only when you distance yourself from the town that you start to realise its saving grace.
That's no other than its amazing location, in the middle of one of the most fascinating mountains of the country! Maybe they exaggerate those that describe it as the Switzerland of Greece but I can see their point.
And when the night is falling and you are standing on a nearby hill, this dingy resort becomes a mystical scenery :)
