When I read that "squares" was the subject for this weeks 's photo quest I immediately thought of the shapes. But then I thought that most of the contestants would think the same, so I took another turn and interpreted the subject differently; I'm submitting one of the most famous squares; the Piazza Del Campo (Field Square) in the beautiful city of Siena in Tuscany, Italy.
We've visited the Tuscan region a couple of times for a holiday and we have visited Siena twice.
Siena is a lovely city with narrow, cobble stone streets. When you walk towards the center the narrow streets suddenly end in this huge, medieval square.
The square is so big that I had to use the wide angle lens on my phone to get it entirely in the frame. That's why it seems that the tower, the Torre del Mangia, is leaning forward. The tower dates from 1348 and is about 102 meters tall. The tower was built as a symbol of the power and wealth of the city.
I asked ChatGPT to fix the tower, but it did more than fixing the tower. The tower also seems to have lost some weight 😂
From now on all photos are my own again. The Piazza del Campo is approximately 333 meters long along its outer edge and covers an area of around 13,000 square meters. Twice a year there is a historic horse race on the square called the Palio which dates back to the middle ages.
In the horse races 10 riders from different city districts compete against eachother.
At the edge of the square are a lot of shop and restaurants. I remember we had a very nice and really Italian pizza there.
The square has a lot of roads leading towards it. At one side you have a couple of portals that are the entry to the square. The old city center simply breathes history.
This shot was taken from the parking place. You can clearly see the tower sticking out above the rest of the buildings of the historic city center. The skyline is dominated by warm earth-toned brick buildings that have hardly changed for centuries.
It's not strange that the historic center of Siena is a UNESCO World Heritage Centre World Heritage Site. Siena is really a city I can recommend visiting!
