Comino Cemetery is arguably one of the most secluded ones in Europe. For a reason. It lies on a hill in the middle of Comino island – a place with mere 2 dwellers. They used to be 3 a couple of years ago but as the time goes, one of them passed away. This person is most likely not buried in the Comino cemetery, though. Its purpose were way darker than providing last rest to the locals. Foreign passengers used to be isolated on the island if they were diagnosed with some of the severe and contagious diseases such were plague and cholera. Those that wouldn’t survived the quarantine were buried in the tombs of this little cemetery. Alas, it is not accessible nowadays.
Hřbitov na ostrově Comino je asi jedním z nejodlehlejších hřbitovů v Evropě. A má to své opodstatnění. Leží na kopečku ostrova se dvěma stálými obyvateli. Ten třetí před několika lety umřel, ale na hřbitově pravděpodobně pohřbený není. Ten má totiž podstatně smutnější účel. V minulosti byli na Cominu izolování cizinci, kteří přijeli na Maltu lodí a byla jim diagnostikována nějaká nebezpečná nakažlivá nemoc. Třeba cholera nebo mor. A ti, kteří nepřežili karanténu, byli pohřbeni v katakombách tohoto malého hřbitova. Ten je dnes bohužel nepřístupný.
At a first glance, the cemetery reminds of many Maltese watchtowers and fortresses, just a bit lower.
Na první pohled připomíná hřbitov řadu maltských strážných věží a pevností, jen o něco nižší.
