Ponta Do Sol is a small town on the southwestern coast of Madeira island. We decided to go there after our hard hike to the highest mountain of the island and find something to eat. Before finding a place to eat, we took a short stroll around the streets there. The total population of Ponta do Sol is 8862 people but this is in 2011, I could find more recent information about that.
Statistically, Ponta Do Sol is the sunniest place on Madeira island. Oddly enough, when we got there, it was covered with a thick cloud cover.
So many colorful decorations everywhere.
We stumbled upon an event that looked like a funeral because they were carrying something that looked like a coffin. A lot of people attended at we thought that someone important had died. It felt a bit strange because people were quite cheerful. Cheerful and funeral dont really mix.
Later we asked the worker of the restaurant, whose funeral was that? We got laughed at. It was no funeral at all, it was a parade of some kind lol, we felt stupid as hell 😅.
I don't have a photo of coffin looking thing. At least we got to experience some local culture.
We went to eat at the place named The Old Pharmacy. God damn, the tapas were so good.
The town is situated right next to the ocean so we checked out the beach as well, a rocky beach. The town is sided with huge cliffs.
It was time to move on and look at some other stuff we had put on our list to see. Only about 300 meters away from the town is a bridge that doesn't seem to have a name, just a bridge. It's in a scenic place. Looks and probably is historic.
A little bit further to the west from the bridge and about one kilometer away from Ponto do Sol is an interesting place. A waterfall that falls straight on the asphalt road, it's quite a sight to see that you don't really see anywhere.
There was a time when this used to be the main road leading to the west. Today it's not and this road only serves the people who want to see this waterfall.
Some people were taking a shower there 😀. I just drove the car under the waterfall, it's a free carwash! Of course, there is always the risk that some small stones may fall too and dent the car.
This was our rental car. In the back, you can also see the same road that stretches along the cliffside.
Overall, Ponta do Sol is a really cool area to explore. Highly recommended when you decide to visit Madeira island. You gotta rent a car tho. I would want to rely on public transportation.
