This is the first time I was able to capture some northern lights action this season. We have had some more opportunities, even as early as end of August but I hadn't taken them.
On Saturday, I was tracking the graphs and watching live cameras because there was a chance that the aurora might show itself. The problem was that the clouds were rolling in, at least in the part I am living. Around 10 PM I saw on the camera that the action had started, lights were dancing in the northern sky. I ran to the front of the house to see if by any chance I see something too. Surprisingly, I did! Even though the light pollution we have here, Fortunately, we still had some holes in the clouds here.
Without further thinking I collected my camera gear and ran outside, to the nearby small patch of field that is the darkest place, of course, it was not really dark at all. There are lights all around. While running, I already prepped the tripod so I can start taking shots immediately when I arrive on the field.
Clouds were, unfortunately, blocking half of the view but at least I saw something. Also with my own eyes and in this light pollution.
Here are some photos I took of this event. I used ISO 1000 and a 10-second shutter speed for these pictures. This is also the first time using my new mirrorless camera to photograph northern lights.
Cheers to many more aurora events to come this season! I will try to use any opportunity I get to photograph this beauty of the cosmic weather.
