A worker in Bangkok's Chinatown very skillfully propping himself up on a narrow ledge whilst asleep
I had just finished my afternoon nap, which has become a habit in recent years that I recommend! Then wondering what I could post on Hive today I had the idea of going through all my street photographs from here in Thailand and putting all the sleepy heads together into a single collection.
And here they are. Thailand has a bit of a reputation for people being capable of going to sleep just about anywhere. For example, post-lunch naps are actually quite common and accepted in offices throughout the country. I guess it's a combination of the heat and Thai society's generally quite laid-back attitude to life.
These photos come from the city of Chiang Mai in the north and Bangkok. The outdoor markets are always a great place for street photography where the crowded atmosphere makes it fairly easy to get up nice and close for those intimate moments. Of course, if the subject is actually asleep it's very easy to take their picture without them reacting to you but I am always a bit worried how somebody would react if they woke up to find me pointing a camera at them. I'm usually a little grumpy when I wake up so I don't think I'd like it, but I never had a problem except with street dogs who seemed to sleep with one eye open and hated being looked at.
People in Thailand can, of course, be very alert and lively...just not in this post.
That seems like a risky way to take a nap
About as comfortable as you can get on a hard bench
Probably a case of being drunk in charge of puppies
Powerman taking a powernap in the back of a two-bench "song-taow" taxi in Chiang Mai
I was never quite sure if this guy was actually asleep but I think he was
Sleeping temple dogs pretending to be prawns
I assume there is a body attached to this man
Two monks gently rocked to sleep by the erratic movements of a Bangkok bus
Possibly homeless, possibly intoxicated, possibly both
Not quite asleep yet but coming soon
Right, now that's done, I'm going to lie down again...
