This is a underground building in Tunisia, They are fairly typical in the southern more desert areas, the concept being that you building into the ground and it helps to regulate the temperature, it's fairly typical that it would would have a large courtyard in the middle with rooms coming of it.
This particular one is in Matmata which is in southern Tunisia, as you can probably tell it has been turned into a hotel, in fact it's Hotel Sidi Driss.
Now if you think this looks familiar, well that's likely because you have seen this before. There are two parts to the hotel, two courtyards if you will, this one, which is a fairly traditional and normal hotel where people can stay, but then the other courtyard/hole is Luke Skywalkers house from Star Wars, which you can read about here. Somehow I think I enjoyed this side of the hotel better
