By the way, many valuable wild fruits are found in abundance in Uttarakhand, which are eaten by the local people, tourists and pastoralists with great fervor, which are full of nutritional and medicinal properties. One of these fruits is Timla, which is known as Anjeer in Hindi and Elephant Fig in English. Its scientific name is Ficus auriculata and is a plant of Moraceae family. In Uttarakhand, Timla is found up to 800-2000 meters above sea level. In actual form, the fruit of tamarind is not a fruit but an inverted flower in which the blossom is not visible.
Timla is neither produced nor cultivated in Uttarakhand. It grows under Agro-forestry or automatically on the fields of fields, which is eaten with great fervor. Due to the large size of its leaves, it is used in abundance for animal feed.
Timla not only has nutritional and medicinal value but also plays an important role in the ecology of mountainous regions. Many birds eat the fruit of tamarind and under this it is helpful in spreading the seeds from one place to another and many wasp species are helpful in pollination of tamarind.
There are about 800 species found under the Ficus genus all over the world. It is found in India, China, Nepal, Myanmar, Bhutan, South America, Vietnam, Egypt, Brazil, Algeria, Turkey and Iran. According to a study of paleontology, it is believed that Ficus curica dates back to about 11000 years before the discovery of cereals.
Traditionally, it is used to cure many physical disorders like diarrhoea, wound healing, for the prevention of serious diseases like cholera and jaundice. According to many studies, eating the fruit of Timla prevents many diseases as well as fulfills essential nutrients. According to the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Science Review Research, Timla is of better quality than commercially produced apples and mangoes. Along with increasing the weight, it also controls blood pressure by reducing the side effects of sodium due to the good amount of potassium in it.
