Bauhinia x blakeana
The Hong Kong orchid tree is believed to be a natural hybrid of Bauhinia purpurea and Bauhinia variegata that was first discovered in 1880 near a ruined house in Hong Kong. It's a sterile hybrid, which means it doesn't produce seeds and is propagated through cuttings or grafting. This is why all Hong Kong orchid trees are essentially clones of the original specimen.
floral emblem of Hong Kong by the Urban Council in 1965.
Bauhinia × blakeana, commonly known as Hong Kong orchid tree, is a small often multi-trunked evergreen to semi-evergreen flowering tree with an umbrella-like shape featuring an irregular rounded crown.
What does Bauhinia x blakeana signify
1.Hong Kong’s Floral Emblem: This meaning is the most popular and official one. The flower was adopted in 1965 as the city’s emblem and is artistically placed on the regional flag and emblem of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and as well as the back of Hong Kong’s coins.
2.The “One Country, Two Systems’ principle: The stylized white Bauhinia flower on a red background in the Hong Kong flag context serves as a permeating symbol. The red background symbolizes the motherland (China), and the white flower symbolizes Hong Kong. The two colors together represent the governing principle of Hong Kong in relation to mainland China: one country, two systems. The five stars on the flower’s petals, which resemble those on the Chinese national flag, express the patriotism of Hong Kong compatriots for their country.
