At the top of the South Island of New Zealand is a place called Ninety Mile Beach.
Like most beaches here, this one is a legal road, and is a unique place for a drive. It’s a great trip, but usually busy with cars and even some off-road tourist buses.
The beach is tidal. To make it along in one go you need to catch the tide as it’s just going out so you have time to get all the way before it comes in again.
Turns out that midsummer, New Year’s Day, when the tide starts to go out in the morning, it is a great time to take the drive. Almost nobody is around.
We had perfect weather, correct tides and an amazing drive.
Enjoy.
