Urban photography, when done at night, changes radically. It conveys a different message. So far I have only gone out on one occasion with the plan to walk through a part of the city with the intention of portraying its streets and people.
It should be noted that the city where I live, Valencia-Venezuela, is not busy, much less during the arrival of sunset. Most of the shops close, the inhabitants go home after a long day's work, but some people walk around as if it were an act of rebellion, or an alternate reality.
La fotografía urbana, cuando se hace de noche, cambia radicalmente. Transmite un mensaje distinto. Hasta los momentos solo he salido en una ocasión con el plan de recorrer una parte de la ciudad con la intención de retratar sus calles y su gente.
Cabe destacar que la ciudad donde vivo, Valencia-Venezuela, no es movida, y mucho menos durante la llegada del ocaso. La mayoría de los locales cierran, los habitantes llegan a sus casas después de una larga jornada de trabajo, pero unas que otras personas transitan como si se tratara de un acto de rebeldía, o una realidad alterna.
I had been inhibited from taking night photographs because I don't have a tripod, besides there is a certain fear that something bad could happen, because there is a certain fear of insecurity, which can sometimes be a stereotype, or not, depending on the moment, but the risk could be worth it.
It is true that things have improved a little bit. People feel safer in the streets, there are some events with different themes with the purpose of entertaining, etc. In other words, a permanently active movement is being sought, despite the fact that the political and social panorama of the country is characterized by uncertainty.
Me había cohibido de hacer fotografías nocturnas porque no tengo un trípode, aparte que hay cierto temor a que algo malo pudiera suceder, porque hay cierto recelo hacia la inseguridad, que a veces puede ser un estereotipo, o no, depende del momento, pero el riesgo pudiera valer la pena.
Bien es cierto que las cosas han mejorado un poco. La gente se siente más segura en las calles, hay algunos eventos de temáticas diferentes con el fin de entretener, etc. Es decir, se busca una movida permanentemente activa, pese a que el panorama político y social del país se caracterice por la incertidumbre.
Another reason why I haven't been encouraged to do night photography is because I don't have a tripod. However, I used pay phones or cars to stabilize the image and achieve what I wanted.
This helped me to record a Christmas event. It's not very usual to see the streets of my city full of people one night, but it was nice to see it alive.
Next time I will take pictures during a normal night, without events, so you can appreciate the huge difference.
Otra razón por la que no me había animado a hacer fotografías nocturnas, es porque no tengo un trípode. Sin embargo, usé teléfonos públicos o automóviles para estabilizar la imagen y lograr lo que quería.
Esto me sirvió para registrar un evento navideño. No es muy habitual ver las calles de mi ciudad repletas de personas una noche, pero fue agradable verla con vida.
En una próxima ocasión haré fotos durante una noche normal, sin eventos, para que puedan apreciar la enorme diferencia.
