Antwerpen-Centraal is one of the most impressive stations I have visited so far. The station with its 75-metre-high entrance hall was opened in 1905 and extensively renovated in 1993. Up to 540 trains stop at Antwerp-Centraal every day. Photographing the station hall was anything but easy. On the one hand, several different artificial light sources are installed there (sodium vapour lamps, mercury vapour lamps and Led lamps). For this reason, it was impossible for me to set a reasonable white balance. The other problem was that I had very little time before the security forces arrived. Somehow they didn't find it so funny that I had set up my tripod in the station.
Antwerpen-Centraal ist einer der beeindruckendsten Bahnhöfe die ich bisher besucht habe. Der Bahnhof mit der 75 Meter hohen Eingengshalle wurde im Jahr 1905 eröffnet und im Jahr 1993 aufwändig saniert. Jeden Tag halten bis zu 540 Züge in Antwerpen-Centraal. Das Fotografieren der Bahnhofshalle war alles andere als einfach. Einerseits sind dort mehrere verschiedene künstliche Lichtquellen installiert (Natriumdampflampen, Quecksilberdampflampen und Led-Lampen). Aus diesem Grund war es mir unmöglich einen vernünftigen Weißabgleich einzustellen. Das andere Problem war, dass ich recht wenig Zeit bis zum Eintreffen der Sicherheitskräfte hatte. Irgendwie fanden die das nicht so lustig, dass ich mein Stativ im Bahnhof aufgestellt hatte.
Right next to the station is the diamond district. About 84% of the world's rough diamonds are processed here. Unimaginable values are stored in the area of about 1 square kilometre. In 2003, the Diamond Quarter was the scene of the biggest diamond heist in history. Diamonds worth 400 million euros were captured. At the time of our visit, heavily armed soldiers were patrolling the area. That was very strange.)
Direkt neben dem Bahnhof liegt das Diamantenviertel. Etwa 84% der weltweiten Rohdiamanten werden hier verarbeitet. In dem etwa 1 Quadratkilometer großen Gebiet lagern unvorstellbare Werte. 2003 war das Diamantenviertel Schauplatz des größten Diamantenraubes der Geschichte. Es wurden Diamanten im Wert von 400 Millionen Euro erbeutet. Zum Zeitpunkt unseres Besuches patroulierten schwerbewaffnete Soldaten durch das Gebiet. Das war schon sehr befremdlich.
In the evening, I took a picture of the illuminated station from the window of our hotel. From below, this would hardly have been possible due to the great height of the station.
Abends nahm ich den beleuchteten Bahnhof dann aus dem Fenster unseres Hotels auf. Von unten wäre das aufgrund der großen Höhe des Bahnhofes kaum möglich gewesen.
