A few years back, when I wanted to expand my passion for photography, I used to work a lot in Lightroom. Of course, I was looking for different portable cameras that could shoot RAW, as I was not always able to have my DSLR with me, and I needed something small and powerful. (not my phone)
Then something clicked in my head to try GoPro photography.
GoPro cameras are made explicitly for filming even in the harshest environments with outstanding results. But not so much for photography.
And the information around the internet about GoPro photography wasn't extensively.
So I bought a GoPro 6 and started to experiment with it. GoPro supports photographing in RAW formats, long exposure photography, and back then, it could capture 12mp images.
The idea of shooting in RAW is that RAW images are blunt, unprocessed, and you can fill the information (post-processing) on a much more extended scale than .jpeg formats.
All DSLR or mirrorless cameras can shoot in RAW. That is the idea, then take the image in post-processing to the next level.
By far, the quality of the images resulting from a GoPro cannot be compared to a DSLR. But was nice to have a camera with me all the time, which could easily fit in my man bag.
The images resulting from a GoPro are slightly different from the ones we are used to taking with our phones or DSLR cameras. They are very wide. I mean really wide, at about 15mm focal length on a wide field of view (4:3 aspect ratio)
The images are sharp. I mean, super sharp. The depth of field is basically so narrow, you don't need a subject to be able to focus on. You don't need to focus at all, or at least it was like that with the GoPro Hero 6.
And yes, I did mention that you can capture long exposure RAW photographs with your GoPro. That is another level in photography in particular that you can either submerge the GoPro underwater or set it up in some inaccessible places where your DSLR won't usually go.
- The "mist" in this photo are actually waves captured with the GoPro using long-exposure techniques.
And one more long exposure image.
Ever since 2018, a lot more upgrades of GoPro have been released until the present. At the moment of writing this article, there is the GoPro Hero 10 Black that captures photographs of 23mp and with considerable improvements in quality of the image, bitrate and dynamic range.
My episode of taking photographs with a GoPro lasted only for a few months. Afterwards, I sold my device (again, I am an idiot, like usual). But I do have a portfolio of GoPro photographs, some better than the others.
Did you ever use a GoPro to capture photographs? What's your opinion about GoPro photography?
Here I will share a few more photos if you are interested.
I have tons more images, but I think that would be enough for now.
And of course, to underline this, after my GoPro Photography experience, I needed to try 360-degree photography. Here is one photo of me doing it with a GoPro 360 camera
To finalize this post, I want to mention that all the photographs were taken by me with GoPro Hero 6 (except the last one, with GoPro 360 Camera), and all of the images were shot in RAW and edited in Lightroom.
Thank you for supporting me. Take care and stay safe! I will see you around.
