On 29th of October, Republic Day in Türkiye, the whole coastline was full of bright red Turkish flags. When I walked near the sea, I felt the scene already had its own strong visual energy. So I wanted to use this energy and create a photo series that plays with geometry, color contrast, and simple human moments.
The first thing that caught my eye was the repeating lines. The railing, the pavement tiles, the long shadows, and also the diagonal ropes of flags moving with the wind. All of them created natural leading lines, almost like the scene was guiding my camera where to look. I tried to position myself higher, looking down, so these lines become more clear and more graphic in the frame. And I was lucky because the wind was in my favor causing the flags swing to the side to cover the surface of the sea.
The strong red color of the flags against the blue sea was another big inspiration. It is a simple color contrast but very powerful. Red feels warm and energetic, and the sea brings calmness. Together they almost fight or dance inside the frame. I wanted to “populate” the sea surface with these flags, so they become like a red texture floating above the water.
While all this was happening, people were walking, jogging, passing by, living their normal day. I tried to place them in the right spots, using rule of thirds, or waiting for them to enter the light. Sometimes I waited for the moment when the shadow of a flag falls near the person. I wanted them to be small figures inside a bigger graphic landscape. These human elements give scale and also a sense of story to the geometric scene.
For me, this series is a mix of national celebration and visual rhythm. It shows how everyday movement, wind, light, and people can create small photographic surprises when they meet at the right moment.
All the best…
