Yesterday I had the honor of covering one of the biggest and most significant folklore events in Bulgaria: SIMITLIA 2023.
I don't like purely reporter shots where the photographer is trying to steal a moment. I prefer to talk to the person, tell them where to stand and just make a connection before a shot. Of course, on such huge events, it doesn't always work out. I present a mix of styles including aerial drone photography.
The event itself is a competition in which each cookery group presents its handmade costumes and parades in front of a jury. The best performers win. An awful lot of children attended, which is great! It is these families that educate future patriots and keepers of traditions.
The event was held at the city stadium of the city of Simitli. I had journalistic accreditation and could go wherever I wanted. This freedom helps tremendously when covering an event.
