Anyone who has tried to capture an image of snowflakes up close understands the challenge. To catch something so tiny and get a decent image showing its details involves not just using a macro lens but also a macro lens that has an extremely close focusing distance.

Having a close focusing distance allows you to magnify the subject much better, often making it seem larger then life size as is the case of these snow flakes.

Using my outdoor railing on the balcony to gather some snow together I tried many different angle to capture their magnificent detail as best I could. My settings would change quite a bit as I tried different things. Sometimes I would have a little to much light, sometimes not enough.

Having a good understanding of manual camera settings helps in these situations if you want to push your creativity a bit further then an automatic mode might allow.
