The other day a curious detail happened to me about black and white in our lives, in our thought process, in emotions, in feelings and in what an image can convey. I had a long and relaxed conversation about black and white with a friend who told me about her opinion on this. She told me that her way of thinking is somewhat extreme in this aspect, she spoke metaphorically and her reasoning was that she saw things either black or white. I am a person who likes to listen and understand the opinions of others and I am not closed to a single personal thought thinking that I have an absolute truth with me, because I know that they do not exist. That opinion caught my attention since she made me reflect on this. In fact, this publication that I show you today is walking through my way of telling it in that direction.
Conversation about gray
As a way of thinking, of attitude, I feel that staying only in that the issues have only two shades of black or white seems to me an excessive way of limiting oneself. I think I've become quite a flexible person in that regard, and as a reed or cane, I have a certain rigidity but I'm also flexible and tolerant. When a structure is totally rigid, a small movement, a small shake or change due to expansion or contraction causes it to crack and break. I like to give a margin of elasticity in my way of leading my life, my thoughts and my way of expressing myself because I feel very comfortable and in my place exercising this attitude.
I went out to take some night images for this purpose, the night also presents its colors depending on the space, plane or image and I wanted to emphasize this theme even more by passing these images to B&W. The city where I currently reside, Cáceres, is beautiful to walk through at night, streets, arcades, towers, palaces, it is located far to the south of Europe in Spain. Apart from digital design, another of the works that absorb me and I love is the transformation of images. Memories come back to me of my time as a boy when I started with analog photography in that attic room where we developed photographic films. Now the process is very different and the way of working with the images to convert them has many more tools where you can select to achieve the result sought by those of us who edit them.
In this photographic editing process we have a series of tools with which we can use, play with them. Contrast, white balance, brightness or color balance that allows us to modify each color separately, operating like a price surgeon on each of our images. Thus, in our lives we have the capacity, the knowledge, the reflection and the same means to modify our attitude and thought.
Double image
The fact of being able to move without taking rigid attitudes in the face of many of the situations we live in has become a subject of meditation for me, not only theoretically but with practical applications that allow me to be a little happier on a day-to-day basis. El otro día me sucedió un detalle curioso sobre el blanco y el negro en nuestras vidas, en nuestro proceso de pensamiento, en las emociones, en el sentir y en lo que una imagen puede trasmitir. Tuve una conversación larga y distendida sobre el blanco y negro con una amiga que me comentaba su opinión sobre esto. Ella me decía que su forma de pensar es algo extremista en este aspecto, hablaba metafóricamente y su razonamiento era que veía las cosas o blancas o negras. Soy una persona que me gusta escuchar y entender las opiniones de los demás y no estoy cerrada a un único pensamiento personal pensando que tengo conmigo una verdad absoluta, porque sé que no existen. Aquella opinión me llamaba mucho la atención ya que me hizo reflexionar sobre esto. De hecho está publicación que os muestro va caminando por mi forma de relatarla en esa dirección.
Como forma de pensamiento, de actitud, siento que quedarse solamente en que las cuestiones tengan solo dos matices en blanco o en negro me parece una forma excesiva de limitarse. Creo que me he vuelto una persona bastante flexible en ese aspecto, y como junco o caña, tengo cierta rigidez pero también soy flexible y tolerante. Cuando una estructura es totalmente rígida un pequeño movimiento, una pequeña sacudida o cambio por dilatación o contracción hace que se cuartee y se rompa. Me gusta dar un margen de elasticidad en mi manera de llevar mi vida, mi pensamiento y mi modo de expresarme, me siento muy cómodo y en mi lugar ejercitando esta actitud.
Salí a tomar unas imágenes nocturnas con esta finalidad, la noche presenta también sus colores según el espacio, plano o imagen y quería recalcar aun más esta temática pasando estas imágenes a B&N. La ciudad donde resido actualmente, Cáceres, es hermosa para pasear por ella por las noches. Calles, soportales, torres, palacios son su recorrido. Está situada muy al sur de Europa, en España. Al margen del diseño digital otro de los trabajos que me absorben y me encantan es la trasformación de imágenes. Me vienen recuerdos de mi época de muchacho cuando empecé con la fotografía analógica en aquel cuarto abuhardillado donde revelábamos las películas fotográficas. Ahora el proceso ya es bien distinto y la forma de trabajar las imágenes para convertirlas tiene mucha más herramientas donde poder seleccionar para conseguir el resultado buscado por los que las editamos.
En este proceso de edición fotográfica tenemos una serie de herramientas de las cuales podemos valernos, jugar con ellas. Contraste, balance de blancos, luminosidad o balance de color que nos permite modificar cada color por separado, operando como un cirujano preciso en cada una de nuestras imágenes. Así, en nuestras vidas tenemos la capacidad, el conocimiento, la reflexión y los mismos medios para modificar nuestra actitud y pensamiento. El hecho de podernos mover sin tomar actitudes rígidas ante mucha de las situaciones que vivimos se han convertido en un tema de meditación para mí, no solo de manera teórica sino con aplicaciones prácticas que me permiten ser un poquito más feliz en el día a día.
