The universe is not as empty and clean as it seems. The Earth passes through several clouds of rubbish as it travels around the Sun during the year. And specifically in mid-August, the Earth encounters the remnants of Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, which form a meteor shower called the Perseids.

The best conditions for viewing the Perseids were supposed to be after midnight on Saturday to Sunday. So at 11pm I packed my backpack with my camera and tripod and headed up the hill, about half an hour outside of town.
I kind of expected the hill to be lively, with other stargazers, but it was just me and then a group of about three teenagers - they were really there for stargazing :)
