Bali is an Indonesian island known as a tourist destination. But there will be no article about it.
The Bali I will write about (actually Μπαλί) is much closer to us, from the Czechia. Only to Greece, specifically Crete. It's quite easy with a travel agent, they usually have direct flights to Heraklion booked. If someone were to take a normal flight, it's with a connection in Athens.
In Heraklion, you get in your rental car and you're on the Cretan "highway" in an hour. The "highway" is in quotes on purpose. It's not a highway in the true sense of the word, but as the link between Heraklion and Rethymno, it's the most important road on the island. As you pass through Heraklion and enter this road, it's good to get a feel for where you are and get a bit of a feel for the Greek "island style" of driving.
I hope the Greeks won't be angry with me, but I get the impression that especially on the islands, traffic laws are considered mere friendly recommendations. A one-way street driven in the opposite direction, or a truck stopped at an intersection just to let Nikolas and Stavros talk, is not unusual. Meanwhile, the ubiquitous scooters zip from curb to curb. When you get out of town, it's a bit better, but again, only on the main roads. Oddly enough, I didn't feel any danger there as a driver. Everyone drives slowly, with a cheerful disposition, no one is in a hurry and certainly no one is stressed or angry. Calm, relaxed, plenty of time.
But back to Bali. If you don't pass a direction sign on the way from Heraklion, turn right off the main road - and you're at the sea. I was in Bali for the first time some twelve years ago and there were about two big hotels, a couple of smaller ones and one main street with shops. And of course a bay with a beach.
Bali je indonéský ostrov, známý jako turistická destinace. Ale o něm článek nebude.
Do Bali, o kterém budu psát, (vlastně Μπαλί), je to od nás mnohem blíž. Jen do Řecka, konkrétně na Krétu. S cestovkou je to úplně jednoduché, ty mají obvykle nakoupené přímé lety do Heraklionu. Kdyby někdo letěl normální linkou, je to s přestupem v Aténách.
V Heraklionu si nastoupíte do auta z půjčovny a po krétské "dálnici" jste za hodinku na místě. Ta "dálnice" je v uvozovkách úmyslně. Není to dálnice v pravém slova smyslu, ale jako spojnice Heraklionu a Rethymna je to nejvýznamnější silnice ostrova. Při průjezdu Heraklionem a nájezdu na tuto silnici je dobré si uvědomit, kde se nacházíte, a trochu poznat řecký ostrovní styl jízdy.
Doufám, že se na mě Řekové nebudou zlobit, ale já mám dojem, že zvlášť na ostrovech se dopravní předpisy považují za pouhé přátelské doporučení. Jednosměrka projetá v protisměru nebo náklaďák zastavený v křižovatce jen proto, aby si Nikolas se Stavrosem popovídali, to není nic neobvyklého. A mezi tím šněrují od chodníku k chodníku všudypřítomné skútry. Když se dostanete ven z města, je to o něco lepší, ale zase jen na hlavních cestách. Kupodivu, neměl jsem tam jako řidič pocit nějakého nebezpečí. Všichni jezdí pomalu, rozšafně, nikdo nikam nespěchá a už vůbec nikdo nestresuje a nevzteká se. Klídek, pohoda, času dost.
Ale zpět k Bali. Pokud cestou z Heraklionu neminete směrovou tabuli, odbočíte z hlavní cesty doprava - a jste u moře. Já byl v Bali poprvé někdy před dvanácti lety a to tam byly asi dva velké hotely, pár menších a jedna hlavní ulice s obchody. A samozřejmě zátoka s pláží.
As you can see in the photos, the beach in Bali is protected on three sides. On the south and west there are high mountains, on the north it is protected from the Aegean Sea by an elongated cliff. Therefore, there is'nt any strong wind and if there are any waves, they are pleasant.
Jak je vidět na fotkách, pláž v Bali je chráněná ze tří stran. Na jihu a na západě jsou vysoké hory, na severu ji od Egejského moře chrání podlouhlý útes. Proto tady skoro nefouká silný vítr a pokud jsou vůbec nějaké vlny, jsou příjemné.
Although I wrote in the previous paragraph that there is almost no wind in Bali, it is enough for windsurfing.
Přestože jsem v předchozím odstavci psal, že v Bali téměř nefouká, tak na windsurfing to stačí.
As I mentioned, the photos are from the archives and are twelve years old. Since then the town has changed a bit, a few new hotels have been built and tourism has increased a bit. Last time I was there, it wasn't so quiet. But on the other hand, it's possible that the epidemic of covid has dampened travel a bit, and it's back to the same old Bali. It's not as busy as the coast east of Heraklion, where there's one hotel next to another for 20 kilometres. And if anyone does get homesick for the hustle and bustle of the big city, Rethymno is half an hour's drive away.
Jak jsem se zmínil, fotky jsou z archívu a jsou staré dvanáct let. Od té doby se město trochu změnilo, vyrostlo několik nových hotelů a o něco se zvýšil turistický ruch. Když jsem tam byl posledně, už tam takový klid nebyl. Ale na druhou stranu je možné, že epidemie covidu to cestování zase trochu utlumila, a je to zase to staré dobré Bali. Není tak rušné, jako pobřeží na východ od Heraklionu, kde je dvacet kilometrů jeden hotel vedle druhého. A kdyby se někomu přece jenom zastesklo po ruchu a lákadlech velkoměsta, tak do Rethymna je to autem půlhodinka.
