Nutrie

Lately I've been doing a lot of nature photography, but actually in the town. That's not surprising with nutria. In Prague, for example, you can see nutria along the Vltava River and in the city center.

I took these pictures at a small lake on the outskirts of the town. People take vegetable scraps there for the wild ducks and swans. But the nutria also feed on it.

Nutria are native to South America and have been bred in Czechia since 1924 for their fur and meat. In fact, this year is the nutria's centennial.

I have conflicting information about nutria. On the one hand, they are said to be difficult to breed. Nutria in captivity are demanding in terms of food quality and suffer from many diseases. On the other hand, wild nutria are an invasive species that breed easily and have no natural enemies in our country. In fact, their only enemy is the freezing cold, which is the only thing that naturally regulates their numbers. So climate change plays right into their hands.

V poslední době dělám sice fotky z přírody, ale ve skutečnosti je fotím ve městě. U nutrie to nepřekvapí. Například v Praze je možné vidět nutrie u Vltavy i v centru města.

Tyhle fotky jsem udělal u jezírka na okraji města. Lidé tam nosí zbytky zeleniny pro divoké kachny a labutě. Nicméně, živí se tím i nutrie.

Nutrie pochází z Jižní Ameriky a u nás se od roku 1924 chovaly pro kožešinu a pro maso. Vlastně letos mají nutrie u nás stoleté výročí.

O nutriích mám rozporuplné informace. Na jednu stranu, jejich chov je prý problematický. Nutrie jsou v zajetí náročné na kvalitu stravy a trpí mnoha chorobami. Na druhou stranu, nutrie ve volné přírodě jsou invazivní druh, který se snadno množí a u nás nemá přirozené nepřátele. Vlastně jejich jediným nepřítelem je mrazivá zima, která jediná může jejich počty přirozeně regulovat. Takže klimatická změna jim hraje do karet.
