Últimamente, después de casi un mes de viajar por Europa sin planes, descubrí que los lugares más turísticos suelen estar sobrevalorados. La belleza escondida yace en cada lugar desconocido, lista para ser encontrada por nosotros.

... Y fue entonces cuando me enteré de Golle Dell'Alcantara.

Golle Dell'Alcantara

Este lugar llegó a mi conocimiento casi como un accidente, cuando escuché a otro huésped en mi hotel hablar sobre él. Aunque no está lejos de Taormina, Sicilia, es más conocido por los lugareños. TripAdvisor tampoco dice mucho sobre este lugar, así que después de buscarlo en Google durante un par de minutos, supe que tenía que ir y comprobarlo por mí mismo. Y me alegro de haberlo hecho.

Golle Dell'Alcantara (o 'Gargantas de Alcantara') se encuentra a solo 7 km de la joya de Sicilia, Taormina. Alcántara es uno de los ríos más importantes de Sicilia y, al visitar las Gargantas, verá una estructura asombrosa de rocas erosionadas y dispersas de forma natural.

At first, you will be able to see the Alcantara river flowing in it's natural course. Fortunately, the biological park in which it's located, has several platforms and balconies for you to see the river from different perspectives.

Al principio, podrá ver el río Alcantara fluyendo en su curso natural. Afortunadamente, el parque biológico en el que se encuentra cuenta con varias plataformas y balcones para que puedas ver el río desde diferentes perspectivas.

After a very nice 30 minute walk in the park, you will start getting closer and closer to the Gorges. The platforms are very well positioned, and allow you to get different perspectives, such as this one:

Después de una agradable caminata de 30 minutos por el parque, comenzará a acercarse cada vez más a las Gargantas. Las plataformas están muy bien posicionadas y te permiten obtener diferentes perspectivas, como esta:

That was my first approach to the Gorge. You see a huge rock in front of you that is so weirdly shaped that's hard to believe. Unlike other very old stones, these ones have erosioned and separated in an almost perfect rectangle shape. Here you can see the Gorge from above:

Ese fue mi primer acercamiento a la Garganta. Ves una enorme roca frente a ti que tiene una forma tan extraña que es difícil de creer. A diferencia de otras piedras muy antiguas, estas se han erosionado y separado en una forma de rectángulo casi perfecta. Aquí se puede ver el desfiladero desde arriba:

And you will see a clearer picture of the rectangle shape in here. To be honest, it did remind me of the little spaghettis I used to make with play-doh while being a child, lol. That has been in my mind almost all afternoon and I couldn't avoid laughing at it!

Y verá una imagen más clara de la forma del rectángulo aquí. Para ser honesto, me recordó a los pequeños espaguetis que solía hacer con plastilina cuando era niña, jajaja. ¡Eso ha estado en mi mente casi toda la tarde y no pude evitar reírme de ello!

This weird rock structure was mostly lava that erupted from Mount Etna, one of the biggest volcanoes on Earth that's part of Sicily. Wherever you go in the island, you will see Etna watching you from behind... lol.

These lava walls are up to 50m tall and their rectangle or prism shape come from the cooling process of the lava itself... but there's still no certainty about how such thing could have been created. The strongest hypothesis says that after a huge eruption from Mount Etna, the lava started cracking due to the difference in temperatures. Interesting, right?

Esta extraña estructura rocosa era principalmente lava que brotó del Monte Etna, uno de los volcanes más grandes de la Tierra que forma parte de Sicilia. Vayas donde vayas en la isla, verás al Etna observándote desde atrás... jajaja.

Estas paredes de lava tienen hasta 50 m de altura y su forma de rectángulo o prisma proviene del proceso de enfriamiento de la propia lava... pero aún no hay certeza de cómo se pudo crear tal cosa. La hipótesis más fuerte dice que después de una gran erupción del Monte Etna, la lava comenzó a agrietarse debido a la diferencia de temperaturas. Interesante, ¿verdad?

After a bit more of an enjoyable walk through the forest (in which a snake jump right in front of me... scary as hell), I had the first sight of the Gorge itself. Simply breathtaking.

Después de un paseo un poco más agradable por el bosque (en el que una serpiente saltó justo en frente de mí... aterrador como el infierno), tuve la primera vista del desfiladero en sí. Simplemente impresionante.

Rocks emerging from every single place and in every single direction, it's simply amazing the beautiful scenery that nature can make. This was just nature at it's finest, I believe I had never seen something as beautiful as this.

Rocas que emergen de todos los lugares y en todas las direcciones, es simplemente asombroso el hermoso paisaje que la naturaleza puede crear. Esto era simplemente la naturaleza en su máxima expresión, creo que nunca había visto algo tan hermoso como esto.

Now, finally, let me introduce you to the beautiful Gorge:

In order to be able to see the Gorge, you needed to get in the water. There was no other possible way. It doesn't sound that bad, till you get into it and realize that the water's incredibly cold.

And by incredibly cold, I mean more or less 5 celsius degrees. Way colder than I could tolerate. Either way, that would be no excuse and I did get into it anyways. I must say it was completelly worth it!

Para poder ver el desfiladero, necesitabas meterte en el agua. No había otra forma posible. No suena tan mal, hasta que te metes y te das cuenta de que el agua está increíblemente fría.

Y por increíblemente frío, me refiero a más o menos 5 grados centígrados. Mucho más frío de lo que podía tolerar. De cualquier manera, eso no sería una excusa y me metí en eso de todos modos. ¡Debo decir que valió completamente la pena!

The mystery around Golle Dell'Alcantara

You wouldn't think that this mysterious place had no spectacular mythological story behind, would you? 'Cause well, there is!

The legend says that this Gorges were built by Vulcan God, to celebrate his love with Venus Goddess. He had warmed the water, so as she could bathe herself and to be able to celebrate her affair with her in that place.

Not long after that, Volcano found out that Venus was being unfaithful to him... and that's when his wrath became unbearable. He not only destroyed the place, but also made the flowing water incredibly cold, as a punishment for her betrayal.

Wow. Astonishing myth for such incredible place.

No pensarías que este misterioso lugar no tiene detrás una espectacular historia mitológica, ¿verdad? ¡Porque bueno, lo hay!

La leyenda dice que estas Gargantas fueron construidas por el Dios Vulcano, para celebrar su amor con la Diosa Venus. Él había calentado el agua, para que ella pudiera bañarse y poder celebrar su aventura con ella en ese lugar.

Poco tiempo después, Volcano descubrió que Venus le estaba siendo infiel... y fue entonces cuando su ira se volvió insoportable. No solo destruyó el lugar, sino que también hizo que el agua fluyera increíblemente fría, como castigo por su traición.
