Hi there my Hivean friends and followers!
I was nicely surprised by your response to my last architectural post that was dedicated to the St. Joseph´s Church in Krakowand it´s my pleasure to show you another remarkable piece of Krakow architecture today.
While the above mentioned church was just an imitation of the Gothic architectural style (yet very impressive of course), the one that I am going to present to you in this post is an authentic piece from the medieval era that has been around for almost 700 years.
Without further ado, let me show you the beauty and majesty of the Corpus Christi Basilica, locally known as Bazylika Bozego Ciala.
This amazing piece of medieval architecture can be found in the old Jewish neighborhood of Krakow known as Kazimierz. The nearby streets are so narrow and the church is so large that again, it was very hard to put the entire structure in one shot. As far as I know, there is actually just one spot from which you can do that - the northerneastern tip of the adjacent Wolnica Square. That´s also where I took the above featured photo from.
Originally intended as a monastery church, the basilica was built at the beginning of the 14th century, during the reign of the prominent Polish king Casimier III (also known as Casimier the Great).
The basilica boasts several impressive primacies. It houses one of the most beautiful choir stalls in Europe and the largest organs in Krakow. It´s also the resting place of Bartolommeo Berrecci, a renowned Italian Renaissance architect who designed a number of famous architectural landmarks in Krakow and some other Polish cities.
We haven´t been inside the church yet but I learned that the interiors consist of Gothic and Baroque features. Originally, they were mostly Gothic but the basilica was robbed and badly damaged by the Swedish soldiers in 1655 so it was renovated and completed with Baroqe features later on.
As you can see in the pictures, I didn´t have a good weather when I was taking them. It was a cloudy gray chilly day and the bad light had an impact on the quality of the photos, unfortunately, but I hope the shots still did at least a bit of justice to the beauty and magnificence of the church. I will definitely try to take some more and better photos next time when the weather is nice ;)
