When you first observe it, you would think that it is a small hummingbird that flies from flower to flower in search of nectar. But when you get closer to look in detail you discover one of the most beautiful and agile moths in the world.
The hummingbird moth (Aellopos titan) belongs to the group of sphinxes, which are mostly nocturnal, however this moth has diurnal habits that extend from morning to the last hours of the day, but prefers to avoid the hours with greater exposure to the sun.
In Costa Rica it is very abundant, although it tends to go unnoticed since it feeds on the same flowers as hummingbirds and as I mentioned, it is easy to confuse them with the latter.

Cuando la observas por primera vez pensarías que se trata de un pequeño colibrí que vuela de flor en flor en busca de néctar. Pero cuando te acercas a mirar con detalle descubres a una de las polillas más hermosas y ágiles del mundo.
La polilla colibrí (Aellopos titan) pertenece al grupo de los esfingidos, los cuales son en su mayoría nocturnos, sin embargo esta polilla presenta hábitos diurnos que se extiende desde la mañana hasta las últimas horas del día, pero prefiere evitar las horas con mayor exposición al sol.
En Costa Rica es muy abundante, aunque suele pasar desapercibida ya que se alimenta de las mismas flores que los colibríes y como mencioné, es fácil confundirlas con estos últimos.
