We live less than an hour by car from the lake Constance and we make sure to spend there as much time as possible. It is a huge lake divided between Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and there are so many things to do and places to see that it never gets boring.
The biggest city on the lake is Constance, but there are plenty small towns and villages that are worth a visit, such as Meersburg that we will visit today.
In the spring, we decided to go to Meersburg as my favourite second hand shop is located there. Frankly, I needed to purchase some clothes for summer and I don't like online shopping or fast fashion 🙂 And we took this opportunity to walk around the town as well.
You can easily get to Meersburg by ferry from Constance. It takes approximately 30 minutes, but for us it is much faster to come from another side of the lake. We agreed that we will try the ferry at least once at some point as it will give us another experience of the lake.
Meersburg is located on several small hills and you can get amazing views of the lake and the Alps from various spots around the town.
We strolled around the park and enjoyed the views. To the right from Meersburg is Constance and to the left are the Alps.
It was a beautiful spring day, and we were lucky to see the entire mountain panorama..
Lake Constance offers activities all year around. In winter, you can go hiking and in summer you can enjoy many sandy beaches which make you feel like you were at the sea, and you can also choose from variety of sports such as swimming or sailing. There are hundreds of sailing boats on the lake each summer. Many of these boats are docked in the place where we live, and from there people sail to the lake and stay there all day.
Let's walk around the town...
The architecture of Meersburg reminds me of small Swiss towns with their typical houses, such as the one on the right.
I think that there is a hotel called Löwen in every single German town. It means Lions and for some reason it's truly everywhere. This building had a beautiful deep red colour.
We walked up to the tower to get to a small square...
There was a fountain which dates back to 1892!
The houses were decorated with various vines. I can imagine those houses are covered with vines in summer. Maybe we will check it out later this year. I can't even think of how many bugs do the owners have in their rooms in summer...
Most houses are very well maintained, and we also came across some renovation works. Meersburg is a touristic town, and there are not many businesses, so it's important that it keeps attracting visitors because it mainly lives from the tourism.
I find such streets very interesting. Each house is attached by a wall to another house, but they are all different. It looks like there was a waiting list for the construction and those houses were built in sequence. Otherwise, I have no idea how they would do it. I could also imagine that there were a few houses built and other houses were added in between of them later. Who knows...
The green shutters on the windows are the best kind of shutters that you can get. They not only keep the light out in the morning, but they are the perfect protection against heat in summer.
As I said, lake Constance has many beautiful places and I'm looking forward to show you some of them in the future.
See you next time...
