It was such a lovely weather yesterday that I couldn't wait for the afternoon to go for a walk. I couldn't focus much, and as soon as I finished what I was doing I jumped in the car and drove to Rheinau which is about 10 minutes away from our place. Rheinau is famous for its monastery that is built on a small island. I usually come here when I need some time alone, but yesterday I came because I knew that it would look fantastic in the sunshine. It's not only a pleasure for the eye, but it's soothing for the soul too.
I love wandering around the island, and that was what I planned to do, but then I saw a small path that I didn't notice before and decided to see where it will lead me. It turned out to be a circular walk of the area and I enjoyed it so much! It was warm and I could take off my jacket for the first time this year. Well, when I look out of the window now it looks like another world as it's cold and rainy again.
Let's have a look around!
Rheinau is not only known for the monastery, but also for its wine. The wine from local vineyards has been produced here for centuries, and some barrels from the monastery era are still in use. There are multiple buildings surrounding the monastery that belong to the winery. There are also restaurants where you can try local wine, or you can book a guided tour of the wine cellars.
The monastery was founded more than 1200 years ago! Although not functioning today, the buildings are used for various events as well as a space for young musicians to practice. The monastery church has become a parish church with regular services. It's one of the most beautiful churches that I have visited. There are many richly decorated altars along the entire length of the church, and there are so many intricate details that you would need days to observe it all. Last time, when I went to the church it wasn't allowed to take photos, and now the church is closed for winter, but I will see if I can show you some photos when I will go there next time.
It's easy to spot which buildings belong to the winery - above the entrance there are two monks with a barrel and grapes.
It can be also written on the façade like here...
I would usually go directly to the monastery, but yesterday I saw that the gardens were open, and I couldn't resist going there first.
It's been unusually warm for this time of the year, and the young grass has started to pop up already which was eye-catching.
From the bridge I admired the architecture of the winery buildings.
The gardens are not big, but there is quite a lot to see. The flowers are coming up, and there is some artwork too!
These sculptures caught my attention. They're called Vogelfrauen or Bird women and each of them costs 700 CHF. I'm not so sure who would buy it though. They're interesting to look at, but personally I can't imagine having such things in my garden.
And yes, there will be some flowers photos today too...
This colour is my favourite. I haven't seen this sort of crocus before.
When I was on the way to the island I saw this path, and at first I thought I would go to the river to take some photos, but then I noticed that the path was going far to the back, so I decided to follow it.
The monastery looks great from all angles!
And the path...
I've turned around and realized that coming from the other side wouldn't be too bad either...
Shortly I've reached a small chapel at the end of the island. There is a small cemetery on the right...
We usually go to the mountains to see some great views, but when I go for a walk like this I realize that other landscapes are beautiful too!
I think we will come swimming here in summer...
The flower buds are about to pop open...
I can imagine how it looks like in summer - all lush green trees, many flowers, and crystal clear water begging you to jump in.
I don't get why this bench is turned away from the water. Well, there is the view of the village on the other side, but the river is much more interesting.
Such a peaceful place...
Which way now? Three possibilities and no signs in sight. I had my phone in case I would get lost, so I chose to walk straight ahead...
Only me and two birds...
And then I got to the village...
The border with Germany is on other side of the river.
What a spring beauty!
After a few kilometres I was approaching the monastery island again. I have enjoyed the trail a lot, so next time I will take my husband with me. We might even do a picnic on the way!
Before I went back to the car, I went to the island too...
From the bridge I could see the mountain church St. Nicholas which dates back to the 12th century. I haven't been inside yet, although I can imagine that it has a simple and practical interior.
And the monastery church again...
Those trees are almost as big as the church!
In summer, there is a restaurant here with a large terrace. We came here a few times for lunch. There is no better place to take a break from work then here.
Look at the reflection! The river is so quiet in this place.
This is the bridge that I crossed on the way to the island.
And the last glimpse of the island before going back to the car...
In summary, t was a good day! 😊
See you next time...
