Today’s trip to the Terminal 21 shopping mall didn’t promise anything unusual. We simply planned to walk around a bit and grab something to eat. But everything changed the moment my son suddenly shouted: “Dad, Dad, live geese!”
I honestly don’t know any other country where the paid animal-feeding experience is so common as in Thailand. You can see it almost everywhere — in parks, markets, small farms, and now even inside shopping malls.
Usually these places have rabbits, tiny piglets that you feed with a bottle of milk, turtles, ducks, guinea pigs and sometimes even baby goats. To be honest, we usually try to avoid such attractions. We don’t really like seeing animals kept in small enclosures, and it’s hard not to think that they might be uncomfortable. On the other hand, they always seem to have plenty of food and water.
This time, however, I couldn’t refuse. My son loves animals, and the whole scene looked quite unusual. The animals were placed right under the small replica of the Eiffel Tower inside the mall, which added a funny touch to the moment. After all, you don’t get to feed a goose under the Eiffel Tower every day.
On a small table nearby you could buy either fresh greens or a small bag of feed, and then offer it to whichever animal you wanted.
For some reason most kids wanted to feed the goose first. Maybe it was simply because of its size. The ducks, rabbits and even the turtles didn’t show much interest in food anymore — they had probably eaten plenty before we arrived.
Unfortunately I didn’t have my camera with me, so all the photos had to be taken on my phone.
Kids usually don’t enjoy walking around shopping malls with adults for too long, but attractions like this instantly change their mood. Feeding animals turns an ordinary trip to the mall into a small adventure.
We talked a little about whether places like this are good or bad. There are arguments on both sides. In the end we decided that, considering the small price, the clean conditions, and the joy it brings to children, experiences like this still give kids something valuable — a chance to interact with animals.
After taking a few more photos near the entrance, we continued our original mission.
Burgers.
They are amazing here, and if you ever visit this mall you can find them on the fourth floor.
See you next time!
