A while back a gorgeous ship visited
my hometown, and I thought I
share it with you guys as it is
such a beautiful ship 😍

About Götheborg

Some history

The East Indiaman Götheborg is a replica of the East Indiaman of the same name (Götheborg), which ran aground in 1745 and sank at Hunnebådan in Gothenburg's harbor entrance.

The East Indiaman Gothenburg has a total length of 58.5 meters and the top
of the mainmast 47 meters
above the waterline.

In 1986, a marine archeological excavation of the original ship began. Construction began in 1995 and eight years later Gothenburg
was launched.

For 20 months between 2005 and 2007,
the ship sailed the historic route to
China and home again.

Since then, they have been out on a number of smaller expeditions in Sweden and in the rest of Europe, in
the summer of 2010 they participated
in the festivities around Crown
Princess Victoria's wedding.

The East Indiaman Gothenburg is classified as a passenger ship but
carries the Swedish East India Company's two-tongue flag, which
was awarded to the company
during its trading hours in the 18th
century and now again at the ship's
launch by the King, to look like a
naval flag in the distance and
thus scare away pirates.

A pin compass:

This simple wooden board was
formerly used to keep track of course
and distance traveled during a
4 hour session.

The different compass directions
are excellent with 8 holes.

Every half hour, when the ship's hourglass was turned, a mark was
made by the market owner based
on the course he kept according
to the magnetic compass.

For "eight glasses", the officer on
duty made an estimate of the
average course during the 4 hours,
based on the eight markings
on the board.
