I was in Botswana recently and headed up to Nata Bird Sanctuary for a night to see the Makadikadi Pans that were beginning to flood with all the rain that had been falling. This brings an abundance of bird life to the area and I was caught up for about 45 minutes watching this little Black-winged Stilt hunting for something to eat.
The Black-winged Stilt is a common resident when the Pans are full carrying the Latin name Himantopus himantopus.
They have black and white plumage and long red legs. Adults may have a dusky crown as seen with this bird that I captured. They often call while they are in flight with a loud 'kik-kik-kik-kik-kik-kik'.
When in the shallows as pictured, they will be seen wading while looking for food.
This was the first time I have seen the Makadikadi Pans full like this. For those that love photographing birds this is a dream destination. The cost is reasonable to stay for the night with lovely hot water in the campsite.
